Having just watched the replay, and something I didn't notice when watching it earlier, Howells last run with the ball ended with a tackle involving Tompkins where Howell at one point upside down and on his head (his own not Tompkins). From the subsequent wide angle shot it seemed that Howell was holding himself when he got up as if he had bean hurt in the tackle.



Not making excuses for Howell, in fact far from it (I think he shouldn't play again until August at the earliest), but any niggle in the previous tackle may explain his disgraceful 'attack' on Tompkins.



I also thought Sam Tompkins was lucky to avoid at least a talking to for dropping his elbow into Howells head whilst Howell was on the ground.

I agree to a certain extent on the last post Tomkins actions while Howell was on the ground were not something he should be proud of. To be on the recieving end of a challenge like that was bad though, and while i do not excuse Sam's actions of retaliation i can in part understand them, but it was very silly of him to get back involved.

Having watched the replay it is one of the worst I've seen and reminds me of the Mick Cassidy challenge on Adrian Morley from 1998 at Central Park.
