Dear me, one or two OTT opinions on here are there not?
10 matches? Worse than Newton on Long?
The lad was not even hurt FFS.
It was a bad one but talk of ten matches is laughable. One of your mob hit Matt King with a FAR worse shot and got off with about three matches IIRC.

I agree about people going over the top but IMO it was far worse than the Mathers/King incident.
Mathers hit King around the chops with his forearm. Howell hit Tomkins with his elbow.
Mathers hit King during a tackle, albiet a bloody awful one. Howell hit Tomkins after the whistle and made no attempt to tackle him. |

So this is how we should determine the length of a ban, on how injured the player on the receiving end was? He could have broken his jaw and Sam was very lucky to not be seriously injured. The challenge was nothing but malicious and the only similar incidents I can think of are the Newton and Cassidy ones.
I agree 10 matches is a bit extreme but the RFL set the precedent so it's up to them to be consistent. |
