For the youngsters out there, he used to play for Warrington, England and Great Britain and was rather good.

Can anyone remember John Bevan's 1st game for the Wire. I think it was against Castleford. He did score on his debut. But having come from union he was a unaware that you have to keep hold of the ball when you get tackled.

Then you missed a treat when he played for us first time round, that 1974 side was the best I ever saw at Wilderspool.

I thought the 1975 team was better when they got Tommy Martyn.

My dad (god rest his soul) used to get a tear in his eye when he told me about the 74/75 seasons. I bit like I'll bore my daugher about '86.

I know its a bit O/T but what about the 1980-1981 team ( Lancs Cup and Regal trophy winners ) and the only reason we didnt win the Challenge Cup and League was because of the ridiculous situation of having to play 9 games in 23 days.

Part time players ... cup semi v Saints on the Saturday, Bradford away on the Sunday ... nice

I'm gonna throw Gerry Helme in, despite never seeing him play, for two main reasons.

A) He won the Lance Todd Trophy twice in the PnB

and

B) he was that good, he made my Grandad, who I'd never heard swear til then, use 'bloody' as an intensifier when describing good he was.
